Hamilton Island’s reputation has been around for a while, and once upon a time it wasn’t so good. But since the Oatley family took over in 2005 the whole place in general and the regatta in particular have gone from strength to strength. 202 starters for the 2015 event. W/L cans racing for those inclined, and trips ‘round the bushes’, meaning islands, for everyone else. An entirely unique yacht club and a huge onshore social scene during the regatta mean that Hamilton Island is definitely playing with a full hand.
Windward-leeward races for IRC 1, 2 and 3, out on the eastern race area. The breeze was only in the high teens, they said, but wind over tide kicked up powerful short chop that made for an interesting ride on the media boat, and delivered some good soakings to boats rounding the top mark.
And more of the same forecast tomorrow.
We didn’t have time to take off our sea boots today, so really can’t count up to 202. So for results please go to www.hamiltonislandraceweek.com.au
